On June 13th, 2025, the curtains closed on the old Sumter Opera House during our Grand Closing Bash. As time slowly began taking its toll on this storied building, closing for major renovations was a big decision that took years to make.

In 2021, the state of South Carolina approved a $15 million dollar renovation budget for the Sumter Opera House. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Opera House is undergoing a comprehensive renovation to modernize our facility while preserving key features that make this building so unique.

While undergoing the most ambitious restoration project in our history, we aim to preserve the Sumter Opera House legacy while preparing it for the future. This project honors the building’s 1930s Art Deco roots as we restore its historic charm and role as a cultural hub for the Sumter community. Major upgrades will modernize the facility—bringing it up to ADA standards, improving backstage and audience spaces, and integrating cutting-edge theatrical systems. The revitalization reflects a deep commitment to both heritage and progress, ensuring the Opera House remains relevant and accessible for generations to come.

How long will you be closed?

The project began in June of 2025 and is estimated to last 18 to 24 months. Like any restoration of a century-old building, timelines may shift as we uncover new “discoveries,” but we are currently on track for an anticipated 2027 reopening. We’re committed to keeping our community informed every step of the way. After all, this is your theater, and we look forward to opening the doors again as soon as safely and beautifully possible.

How is the renovation being financed?

In 2021, the state of South Carolina allocated $15 million to preserve and revitalize the historic Sumter Opera House, recognizing its cultural and architectural significance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Opera House now qualifies for valuable tax credits that help fund its preservation without burdening local taxpayers. This investment safeguards a vital community landmark while preparing it to serve future generations.
